Finally, the Covenant University Enactus team emerged as the overall winner of the 2019 Enactus Nigeria National Competition, held yesterday, July 11, at the iconic Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos. The team beat 17 other teams from various universities across the country. Their joy was palpable having finished in second place for two years in a row both times losing to Ahmadu Bello University. This time however, they got the better of ABU who finished at second place.

Their project, The Pet City initiative, which focused on turning plastic waste into sustainable building materials that are durable and cost effective, was the project that earned them the victory in this year’s competition. According to their team lead, David Iyiola, the Pet City initiative “will reduce the cost of providing houses by 60% and would increase the annual income and standard of living of 150 women by 25%.”

Their second project. TOLES, is a social enterprise that aims at providing children in impoverished communities with eco-friendly and durable footwear from used and scrap tyres. The team successfully produced and distributed 3922 footwear, created jobs for 257 persons at the production factory and repurposed over 600 waste tyres. The team expressed gratitude to Guaranty Trust Bank for the N1m grant that enabled them kickstart the project.

“It means a lot to us and the school”, Iyiola said, while speaking to our correspondent after they were announced winner of the competition. “We have all worked so hard and our hard work was not in vain”

Mr. Michael Fagbohun, a technical service librarian at Covenant University and the faculty adviser to the Covenant University Enactus team praised his team for their focus, commitment and diligence. Speaking over a phone interview, he said “the university would be proud of their students for taking the university’s name to a global community. I am so happy and proud”.

Covenant University will, in September 2019, be representing Nigeria at the Enactus World Cup holding in San Jose California, USA.
